ï and ë exist to avoid ‘klinkerbotsingen’ (vowel clashes) – in altruïsme we use the ï to indicate that the u and the i have to be pronounced seperately – [ui] is a diphthong.

These are very difficult but interesting
because I don’t know nothing about Dutch.
ältru, I found in finnish word “altto” and “altruistinen, epäitsekäs” but it somehow sounds like a swedish word alltmera 🙂 and that smë like smaka…
but anyway these are very fascinating.
